First-hand account

Luke Smith from Silverstone Gardening shared his experience: “The first ride-on mower I ever bought for my business was a Hustler FasTrak. I had it for years and it never let me down. When the time came for an upgrade, I learned the Super S stand-on was coming to Australia, so I put in an order. It was the first Super S in WA.

“We’ve had it now for several years, and again, it’s never let us down.”

A rich heritage Inventor John Regier recognised the simple need for a ride-on mower that could manoeuvre irregular landscapes, so he set to work creating one from farm machinery and mower parts. The mower could hug a flagpole or reverse direction at a fence with a turning radius of zero. With this, the world’s first zero-turn Hustler mower was born.

Regier couldn’t maintain the productiondemand, so he took his design to Excel Industries. Excel Industries wanted to expand its product line and, having seen the mower in action, knew it would revolutionise the mower industry. Under the direction of company president Roy Mullet, Excel began production at its plant in Hesston, Kansas, and introduced the Hustler in 1964. Image: Hustler Mowers
