Following positive experiences with Hitachi equipment, two Australian contractors have invested in new Hitachi Zaxis-5 minis to work on landscaping and housing development projects. The compact machines share many similarities with larger models, proving equally versatile and reliable.
Hitachi’s mini excavators have a reputation for being incredibly reliable, high performing compact machines offering operator comfort and ease of maintenance. Hitachi Construction Machinery (Australia) Pty Ltd (HCA) customer Josh VanDenbrink, owner of Ambleside Landscaping in South Australia applauds the Hitachi mini excavator range on their ‘exceptional performance, user-friendly capability and reliability’. Ambleside Landscaping have been operating for 15 years and are now onto their third mini excavator purchase from Hitachi.
“Having the Hitachi mini excavators ZX17U-5, ZX33U-5 and ZX48U-5 as part of our operation has supported the growth of our business and enabled us to take on more jobs delivering landscape solutions to our customers,” adds Josh.
The latest range of Zaxis-5 mini excavators are fitted with factory standard hose rupture valves, which have been integrated in all mini excavator models to further enhance machine safety. In addition, the new minis boast a strengthened frame structure, designed for enhanced safety and greater machine durability. Not only has productivity increased by an average of 2.75* per cent across four of the new models, but an 11.5* per cent reduction in fuel consumption also exists within these respective models.
Made in the state-of-the-art Hitachi facility in Japan, they are then assembled to an exceptionally high standard at the HCA factories in different branch locations across Australia. The 1.7 to 8.5 tonne models share the same highly responsive hydraulics and controls for which all Hitachi excavators are renowned. They are also linked to Global e-Service via ConSite, which provides owners instant access to data including operating hours and location, and the ability to plan required maintenance in advance.
Although similar to larger Hitachi models, the mini excavator range offers a greater degree of versatility thanks to its ability to work precisely and efficiently in small challenging spaces. This was an important factor in the purchasing decisions of D & D Lumsden Earthmoving, who recently invested in an upgrade to a ZX55U-5 model.
Established in 2006, D & D mostly operate in the Hunter and Newcastle region working on landscaping and new housing development projects. Operations Manager Pat has been operating Hitachi machinery controls for which all Hitachi excavators are renowned. Established in 2006, D & D mostly operate in the Hunter and Newcastle region working on landscaping and new housing development projects. Operations Manager Pat has been operating Hitachi machinery since his first second-hand ZX35U model 15 years ago, and says he ‘hasn’t looked back since’.
“This is the first Zaxis-5 mini excavator we have purchased along with a ZX225-5 on order. They were recommended by HCA for any work on housing developments, which requires precision in confined areas,” he said.
“We thought we’d try out the latest model because the operators love using Hitachi machines already. It’s very fuel-efficient, and compact for working in confined spaces.”
The ZX55U-5 is being utilised to excavate the new Huntlee Estate located in the Hunter Valley region, helping to create internal and external drainage for new housing, and backfilling after the work has been completed. “It’s a versatile machine and very responsive,” says Pat, who supervises the site and also operates the mini excavator. “That’s the beauty of the new machine, it’s powerful for a five-tonne excavator.” He’s also assured of the reliability of the ZX55U-5, based on his previous experience of working with Hitachi construction equipment: “Of all the machines I’ve driven over the years, there’s no comparison with Hitachi. They’re reliable and never age.”
Operator comfort is another key consideration, not only for the happiness of operators, but also for efficiency on the job site. “I’ve been working in the construction industry for over 15 years, operating machines from two to 70 tonnes and working 12 hours days. The ZX55U-5 is comfortable, and easy to get in and out of to change attachments. This is really important as it saves time on this type of project.”
It’s also never been a better time to upgrade for customers after HCA announced some amazing deals on their mini range, giving customers the option to choose one from three great offers with the purchase of a Hitachi mini excavator:
- 0% finance for the first 12 months OR 1.99% for 48 months OR
